A study has confirmed that real and physical garment try-ons are comparable

Producing physical prototypes takes a lot of time. For the first time, the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences has studied the extent to which a digital design corresponds to a physical design. The result? 3D Vidya performs excellently in sizing & fitting checks.

The Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences put a simulated garment to the test and compared it with a real one in terms of digital sizing & fitting. “This study has shown for the first time that the results of the real and the virtual fitting sessions are really comparable. This clearly shows the great potential of virtual prototyping,” says Prof. Dipl. Designer (FH) Barbara Putscher from the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences.

The technical requirements for virtual fitting sessions are high levels of quality in the simulation of humans, patterns and materials, all of which 3D Vidya masters perfectly – because in 3D Vidya, every simulation is based on a real cut, meaning that it consists of sewn, CAD cut pieces, just like the real thing. Thanks to integration with the iSize body dimension portal, 3D Vidya can access real data on body dimensions, body volumes and motion behaviour. Real material parameters are also used in 3D Vidya, reflecting the natural stretch behavior of the fabric – so drape, stretchability and the structure of the digital prototype correspond to the natural motion behavior.

This means that digital prototypes can adequately replace physical patterns, saving a lot of time and material costs in product development.
